The Christmas coffee that never got brewed
I grew up in a household that exclusively drank Nescafe instant coffee (a British staple), so for a while that's all I knew. I then took my first sip of a coffee from a specialty roaster in my town and was hooked from there on. A few years down the line and I'm working at said roaster, so I obviously got to tick one gift off the list for my parents in the form of a bag of delicious single origin coffee. Pre-ground for their French press and wrapped by the tree, it wasn't very inconspicuous due to the gorgeous smell that not even the real Christmas tree could cover up, so I gave it to them as soon as I arrived so we could enjoy a cup. They loved it. I loved that they loved it. All was well because I could have a real cup of joe on Christmas morning to start the day of excitement out right. Fast forward to the next year when I come to visit again, I look in the cupboard...shock and horror pierced my soul, there it still was. Untouched. Unconsumed. Sadness. Over a year post-roast and it was very stale. The jar of instant Nescafe coffee sitting on the counter almost finished. I had to step outside to shed a single tear and scream into the wind.
